Orh-bak-car

Can somebody pls give me a good remedy for removing eye rings? I would be eternally grateful.

These are some good ol' natural ways that supposedly help to reduce them black eye rings...
1) Sleep early
2) Wake up early
3) Drink lots of water
4) Eat fruits & vegetables
5) Don't rub your eyes too hard
6) Put lemon slices on your eyes (something i just heard recently)
7) Go and sun tan till your facial skin tone is as dark as your eye rings (haha, now this is something i thought of :P)

But if anyone else has anymore ingenious & EFFECTIVE ways to cure eye rings, pls do drop a note...

F A T

I've grown fatter!

Riggghhhtttt... i'm sure most of you must be rolling your eyes, cos whenever i ask friends whether i put on weight and if my face is pudgier, they all just dismiss it with a wave of their hand, or violently retort, "Hello?! If you're fat, then what am i???" sheesh... touchy topic eh...

But it's true. I mean, we're talking about relativity here wad... Last time, i was skinnier and lighter. Recently, after traveling to Kota Tinggi & Kuching, I ate quite a bit & have put on about 2.5kg! Perhaps it doesn't show, but i'm so sure i've grown fatter and i shocked myself today when i tried on an old pair of shorts, which used to hang dangerously on my hips, but now it is FITTING. Hah. That just means 2 things. I've got fatter (though i'd like to think i've become fuller at the hips hahaha), and i've got a new pair of shorts now that i can wear... heh.

And my jeans... oh my goodness. I have to suck in my breathe to wriggle into my Levi's and fight to get that damn button into the hole. The problem with having button fly jeans... :( My arms seem bigger too, but maybe that's cos all my muscles have evaporated with all the lack of exercise & all the eating. Gone are the "glory days" when i was tanned & tonned. Abs are somewhat liquified as well... sigh tis depressing...

Well, straight after getting back to Singapore from Kuching yesterday, went for dance practice. Dance really keeps one fit man. I can simply feel the difference... the stretching, toning, conditioning & the pure joy of sweating it all out & of cos... the pain... *ahhh* muahaha... Today, went swimming, in a feeble attempt to follow-up my drive to exercise, but my stamina now is as limp as a... "lau-hong" keropok? Managed to do up 6 laps only. HAHAHA. And during the 5th lap, my lungs felt like exploding already. Spent the majority of the time lazing on the deck chair in the end, and i actually fell asleep... my goodness. Not a very productive or enjoyable swim i must say, as there was this gang of Vietnamese girls in the small pool near the deck chairs yakking and yakking away, making it just so noisy for me to even rest properly. And while i was swimming, i felt like i was swimming in either the South China Sea or the Indian Ocean. To my left, this gang of PRC guys, to my right, the gang of Indian guys. Not that i'm against their nationalities or anything... the Indian guys were fine, but the Chinese, esp this particular idiot was just SO revolting... kept "kor-pui-ing" and spitting into the pool drain. YUCKS. Couldn't stand being in the same pool as him.

Oh well, for now, just looking forward to the next dance practice on Saturday. I think i shall go jog on Friday.

Earning my keeps

When people are in school, i'm sure you often hear them complain how studying is so sian & stressful, & that they can't wait to get out & work... where they can earn money & dun have to care or worry about assignments & all that. Well, i personally never really belonged to that category, cos i always enjoyed being a student, regardless of how much i bitch & complain about projects, tests, lecturers, NUS, etc... Perhaps the stresses & nature of work is different for a student & a worker eh, but sheesh, i kinda miss being a student. Haha... i'm such a wuss.

Well, reason why i'm talking about this, is cos i've been working for the past 3 days in a research solutions company, doing mindless coding & data entry work. It's ok, very manageable, but just extremely monotonous & repetitive. Thankfully, i work pretty fast, plugged in my radio while i worked & had BK for company, so it was quite enjoyable. What to do, i better work as much as i can to earn more moo-lah, given the amount of $ i am gg to spend over the next 2 months.

Today, no work, cos we've finished the work that had to be done already. Planned to go tan, but why does it always keep raining? Isn't the monsoon supposed to be in September?! And no, i don't know these things, even though i'm a geographer, so quit asking me why it keeps raining! It better not rain over at Kuching, my next destination... flying off tomorrow and be back on Tuesday. Die, gonna miss a lot of dance practices & i'm so way behind everything!!! Hmm, but so far, i really like the Jazz choreo... I think Jazz is my cuppa tea, it's got this sleekness & subtle seductive tinge to this genre of dance, which i really think is so wonderful to watch & easy to appreciate... plus it feels even better if you are the one dancing it out, cos it makes you feel sharp & powerful & oh-so-sexy... haha... pity my flexibility is like crapppp, so... damn it, when it comes to moves that require agility, 'fraid i can't produce the effect 100%. :(

Ok, this entry is getting boring... i shall end with a quote that was msn-ned to me just a minute ago by a friend - "My advice to you is to get married. If you find a good husband you'll be happy; if not you'll become a philosopher" (Socrates: ??BC).

Lights, camera, action!

I had my 1st encounter filming today, helping out to act in a small role for my friend's short film FYP. Boy, was i impressssssssed. I wouldn't have thought it was a student project or amateurish, cos everything from the sound, audio, lighting, make-up, set-up, photography... was professional man!

I'm floored.

Woke up at 6.15am to get ready to wait for J, who was coming by to pick me up... The scene was in Sengkang, so by the time we got there, it was already 8am due to some slight delay cos of the heavy rain this morning. The setting was in this showroom apartment, which was fully furnished & i must say that the flat was very nicely done up indeed. A very modern, sleek living room area, with very colour-coordinated cosy bedrooms & matching furniture & all... There was even a walk-in wardrobe in the master bedroom... *dreams away*

1st "wow": the amount of equipment that was being set up.
For an indoor shot, there was like a whole truckload of cameras, stands, lighting props, tripods, bulbs, screens & all kinds of gadgets... Just looking at that alone made me pretty nervous, cos i was expecting at most a few screens and perhaps a simple tripod camera! How silly of me :P

2nd "wow": my make-up artist
She is this very nice lady called Fiona, who got down to work on me the moment she came. Hmm, i was sleepy, groggy & had a serious case of black eye rings & i was thinking she would have to put in a lot of gongfu on my face, given the "lak-sek" condition it was in... but i knew i was in good hands, the moment she poured out a flood of powdersblusherseyeshadowslipsticksbrushespalettesconcealers-

pencilsglittertweezerscreamsmascaras...
and in case you couldn't say that in one breath, she practically had a MAKE UP school in her little black bag. And that's just the stuff. The way she mixed the creams & colours into such beautiful effects was simply amazing... and when i asked her whether she learnt all this from courses or from school, she said that she learnt it all by herself. *cough* ooo-kaay... erm, like... "wow-you know"? And the other thing about her was that she even did my hair. Like wassup man?! She's a hair stylist cum make-up artist as well?! Fwah... in any case, i was just lapping it all up, enjoying the whole experience & boy it feels so gooooood hahaha :P I want my own make-up artist!!!

3rd "wow": who's that girl?
There was no mirror in front of me throughout the whole make-up process, which took about 1 hour or slightly more, so i never knew what she was doing & how i looked. So when i finally got to take a look at myself... i was really shocked! I didn't recognize myself in the mirror & for once i actually look quite nice! hahaha... make-up seriously does wonders... the orh-bak-car & my spots & freckles seemed to have vanished & i really thought i was looking at someone else in the mirror.

4th "wow": the producer
Now this is a guy who really knows his stuff man. He's the dawggg of the dawg pound (as Randy Jackson would have put it), cos he's just so damn pro. He knows exactly what he needs & how to get those effects & everything down to the most minute detail, he would be able to catch onto it & make the necessary changes. Hmm the ignorant me was simply awed by the fact that simple things like styrofoam boards & pieces of paper could be used to create light effects & tricks, which really made a difference on camera. What angle, what kind of light - 'spot' or 'flood' - how to frame it, what intensity... my goodness, the list just goes on... And he was really a good person to work with too, as he's quite a joker himself. He & the production guys call one another "eh bradder" (brother) & their silly jokes & antics made me lighten up a lot. Towards the end, one of them started calling me "shi tou" (meaning stone in chinese) & whenever he did that, he would always give this cheeky grin. Hah, i'm so thankful i'm used to this type of jokes liao...

5th "wow": the acting itself
Initially, i was trembling like a leaf. My lips were trembling like mad, but apparently it was not noticeable, cos i asked Fiona if she could see me shaking... sheesh... but as we took more takes of the same scene, i began to ease into the role more comfortably & got used to the camera & lights too. Heh, but there was once i forgot my lines... oops... was so pie say :P Thank goodness, the screen chemistry with Roy (my reel bf) was ok & it was not too awkward. Heh, but after a while, i think i smiled too much (since my character was supposed to be as cheery as a sunflower), until my smile lines creased my face powder! hahaha... made me look like a baboon with those lines, but thankfully, it can't be seen on camera. Hee hee... i mean, hoo hooga hoo...

The whole shoot lasted till about 3pm. After several rehearsals & rolls of the same scenes & re-takes of different angles, with some shots re-taken up-close, i realised how much work it really really takes to act. Not as easy as it looks on screen. Even a simple scene like mine took quite a bit of work to get everything right. And each time a shot had to be re-taken, all the lights, audio, cameras, etc had to be re-positioned, re-checked, re-aligned, re-framed, re-everything... it made me appreciate the behind-the-screen crew much more, cos the show really cannot go on without those pple... kudos to them man!

It was great. I had a lot of fun & can't wait to see the final product. I just hope i did justice to my friend's FYP! Hmm, i think if opportunity came along at the right time, i wouldn't mind doing this again... but for now... it's a wrap! :)

Picking up the pieces

Life is full of surprises. And things happen at the weirdest timings, that sometimes just throw one off track. I sometimes feel i am "de-railed". Sometimes i fight to keep myself from veering off the track, though it gets really hard when the day is coming to an end and the darkness falls & i'm all alone.

I'm glad that i got to talk to my ex. We finally had some sort of closure & it's a step towards the healing process for both of us i hope. Had it come too late? Though i guess we had our regrets for not speaking to each other sooner, it is easier to see this now that i'm looking back. I just couldn't do that back then. I was just too muddled & foolish... wounds were still raw & the pain & resentment was just too strong to allow a clear-headed & neutral meeting. He thought i refused to talk to him. But it's not true... i just knew it was not the time, cos i would not be ready & things would have gotten worse if i approached him then.

But now, the wounds have dried up & though i myself no longer feel any negative feelings toward him at all, there are some scars. Not scars that bring about hatred or jealousy. But scars of a remorseful, sad & repentant nature. Never thought i would still be like that till now. I am happy, keeping myself busy, doing stuff, travelling, etc... but the pain is still there. And it's a pain that only i can face alone & not to anybody else. Friends are there to comfort, talk to, advice and all... but there is always this part that nobody ever will see.

I wish him all the very best. And i really hope he finds true happiness with the new person he is with. He really deserves it. He deserves much better. I've come to a point at this moment in my life whereby i would do anything to help, as long as he doesn't hurt anymore. I so wanted to hug him & just cry, cos i'm hurting so bad, but to be fair & strong, i know i must never do that. I must be strong, cos it's the only way to help us both out. I cannot afford to confuse him or hurt him by doing such things & i don't want to make things difficult/awkward for him cos he is not single like me. I guess, it will take time for me to get over all this. Perhaps a few years. But i know i can do it. I must.

If i ever break, i hope i will remember this line. What doesn't kill you, will make you stronger. And i always remind myself that God is ever faithful & i must trust in Him in all things. Yup. I am trying to do that. Things will be alright. It just takes some time.

I suffer from bruxism

I finally made a trip down to the good ol' dentist today, after years of procastinating. Hmm, the last time i went for a check up was like in... sec 4? Ho ho... just imagine that... and so much for "visit your dentist regularly every 6 months".

That explains why i brushed my teeth & took pains to clean it up properly before heading down. Half the time i was wondering what the dentist's reaction would be, considering the fact that it's been eons since i've got my teeth checked. And the other half of the time, memories of my wonderful dentist back in primary & secondary school days came back to me, & all i could remember was those awful drills & disgusting picks the dentist would use to poke, screw & mutilate my teeth with. *shudder* Back in those days, it was painful & merciless experience & i always remember having these little bits of fragments in my mouth... somehow they felt like bits of my teeth that were drilled off...

Anyway. Today's visit was nothing like those in my childhood. In fact, it was quite an enjoyable experience... Firstly, you have a nice dentist who keeps on reassuring you (even though i really didn't need it at all), & the bonus was that he wore nice cologne haha... :P Secondly, i didn't realize that dentists nowadays super high-tech man... the drills & all those instruments he used were like so cool... & they totally didn't hurt me a bit...

Realised that i suffer from this condition of teeth grinding. It's when you sleep & you unconsciously grind your upper jaw & lower jaw together, thus creating friction between your teeth & in the process, they are worn out. If severe, they may even wear out all the way to the gums i think...

Dentist: I'm going to make a guard for your teeth, so that it'll help to prevent you from grinding your teeth. It's a bit costly, costs $250.
Me: (what the hell....)
Dentist: Do you feel any pain or discomfort when you wake up in the morning?
Me: No, but when i move my jaw, they crack.
Dentist: How old are you?
Me: (what a weird question out of the blue...) erm, i'm...
Nurse: (interrupts) 23
Me: Is it really necessary for me to get the guard? I mean, is my teeth grinding very severe?
Dentist: Erm, the reason i asked about your age is because, for your age... your teeth are pretty worn out already.
Me: (wad??) Worn out?
Dentist: Yes, now the teeth has these upper & lower "contours" (i forgot the scientific term he used). Your upper contour is almost flat already...
Me: ...

And so, i busted $250 to get the guard. The dentist plugged these moulds with green gooey plasticine and made me sink my teeth into them. My teeth imprint was then obtained with which they would make a personalised mould for me. Reminded me of those forensic investigations aka CSI...

Why do pple grind teeth you ask? Answer: Stress. It so figures why i suffer from bruxism.

Goodbye school, hello working world...

It's 3.30am now & guess where i am?

In school.

Today was the last day of my exams, which also means the end of my school life. Varsity life has come & gone & it's just such a wierd feeling to know that my days as a student has finally ended. After 16 years of attending school, it feels like i've reached a huge crsoss-junction whereby the next path i take leads to a new highway - the highway of the working world.

Nostalgia... i will really miss the times in honours class & the whole environment of being together with classmates & friends. Today's BBQ at Kent Vale, organised by Dr Park & Dr Lee, was kinda like the last official class gathering.

Now, in the GIS lab with 5 others, we are breaking all rules possible. Eating, drinking, playing mahjong & staying overnight in the lab. Haha. But technically speaking, we have "graduated" already... so i guess these rules don't apply to us anymore right? haha...

Ok. I think i will go sleep soon. I still have to wake up tmw for an audition & for dance... zzz...

Fire-BALLS

Fireball was indeed a "ball" of a time. It is, in one word... bizarre.

The venue was at the old Parliament House, situated behind Victoria Theatre. The building itself was really charming, having that old colonial flair & architectural style to it, albeit having been given a face-lift and all. The 1st part of the evening's journey started outdoors in front of the building itself. There, the audience was made to stand round this area which had 4 white styrofoam-looking podiums and in between them, a long red carpet leading from the pavement all the way into the main entrance of the building. So far so good.

And then.

The emcee of the show truly & absolutely reinforced my stand that for important occasions (like weddings, concerts, etc), he/she has to speak well. And i don't mean fako-Anglo accented ang-moh English, but articulation & pronounciation at the bare minimum please! This is how it went (more or less)

Emcee: Hello goo evening orr-diance, come come stand here for the gud angle to see the show...
(Audience trudges over to where he is)
Emcee: Gud gud, ok now let's introduce the beau-tee-ful dancers ya??
(Dancers move out onto performing area)
Emcee: Wow! So beau-teee-ful right audience? So lovely ya? They performing for all of you in front of this the Parliament House... see they make until so nice right? So exciting right orr-diance??? Look at the beau-teee-ful place here & the beau-tee-ful dancers. Wow, so many colours, all so lovely right?
(And it goes on & on... I think the only movement in the audience was the constant rolling of eyeballs)

Think you get the idea? If not...

(All the dancers, choreographers, musicians, make-up crew & our lovely Transvestite babes one by one took to the red carpet & were introduced to us by the emcee. It was like live credits, "Oscar" awards style...)

Emcee: Let's welcome our spaaaa-tial gas!!! (translation: special guests)
To the transvestite: Wow! You look so gore-jusss! (gorgeous)... all the feathers & lovely dress, so beau-tee-ful......

Enough. It was bad enough hearing him. Much worse looking at him in his 3 layered thick suit, in which he was sweating like nobody's business man.

The rest of the night was spent moving between 4 areas, in which different dance, music & arty-farty installations was presented to us. No conventional theatre seats wadsoever. You get to sit on sofas, on the floor or stand for different items. The whole thing took almost 3 hours... ending in the ex-Parliament chamber itself. Irony of all ironies - having a transvestite performing in a once-sanitized political space if you will. But all in all, it was indeed a novel experience. I could see that the Ecnad Company put in a lot of effort & thought to the whole concept, althought i felt that sometimes local artistes shouldn't try too hard to try to impress. i.e. Avant-garde ain't exactly appealing to the pple here, especially given that Singapore's theatre-going crowd is pretty small to start with. Well, i couldn't really appreciate it fully myself so perhaps i speak only for my rather cultural-deficient knowledge of such genres.
